Super Typhoon Maemi

Fritz requested an animation for the CEOS meeting that featured an asian typhoon. Many of our animations are focused on the United States, but CEOS is an international meeting so animations featuring other parts of the world were needed. Since we did not have a deep archive of any data except NCEP, searched through the storm track records of the past few months for large storms - Super Typhoon Maemi turned up as a good candidate for animation, though since GOES-9 has been filling in for the missing GMS since spring 2003, the data source would still be US.

The ncep data has a slightly strange appearance since pixels at higher latitudes are shifted proportional to the IR temperature estimated height - this leaves some areas of missing data as seen in this section of an image centered on the outflow of the typhoon:
