GOES-9 1 minute interval data over florida

This is a 1-minute interval GOES-9 dataset that shows thunderstorm development over florida. There are 367 images in this series which runs from 1231 UTC to 2344 UTC on July 2, 1995 The data had many errors caused by noisy reception, which were found and removed by an IDL program I wrote that interpolated between adjacent good data. The data also drifts spatially quite a bit from the beginning to the end of the series.

Here are three quicktime movies made from a subset of the data showing the data before and after being fixed and aligned. Only two images per hour are used to make the test movies be a reasonable size. The first movie shows the data with bad lines masked with zeros, the second shows the data with the bad lines filled with linearly interpolated values and the third shows the data aligned to remove x and y shifts caused by inaccurrate navigation.

After several attempts, I wrote some software to automatically align the GOES-9 images. It only finds whole pixel alignment, so at some point I'll have to find or write a program to do subpixel matching. In the meantime I made a color time series animation by combining the GOES-9 data with a MODIS cloud-free background image.
