AMSR-E SST

Nov 2003

George Huffman requested an AMSR-E SST animation for the keynote he will give at ISRSE on Nov 10th. Jesse Allen had been creating a version of the daily AMSR-E SST data with a color table that emphasized the cool water tracks that followed major hurricane, but he had scheduled vacation during the time the animations were required. I took the images Jesse had produced and assembled two time-series animations, one centered on the Atlantic and one on the Pacific. The animations have somewhat truncated colorbars to cover the temperatures of interest and also have timestamps added. There are 15fps and 30fps versions of each animation, the 15fps versions are the better ones.

I also plotted storm tracks for all tropical storms with gusts greater than 150 during the duration of the AMSR-E timeseries and overlaid them on the AMSR-E SST for the last day of the storm. There were 21 tropical storms during the time series, the stills containing the storm tracks are named with the year and doy of the data and the name of the storm. The first character of the file name indicates which hemisphere the storm occured in. This example shows the storm track of Hurricane Isabel on September 19,2003, the other storm track plots are here

the track of Hurricane isabel is a white line over sst data which varies from blue to yellow
